Mongolia is a resource rich country of 1.56 million square kilometers in area that has a sparse population of 2.7 million people. It has only in recent times experienced its first mining boom with discoveries of major world class deposits in Gold (Boroo & Gatsuurt), Copper (Oyu Tolgoi & Erdenet), Coal (Tavan Tolgoi), and Uranium (Martha & Saddle Hills). This rapid advancement in resource development has formed a solid foundation for continued growth in the country for many years to come.

The Oyu Tolgoi copper/gold mine is expected to generate approximately $61 billion USD over the next 27 years. The total investment in Oyu Tolgoi alone is 3 times the annual GDP of Mongolia. The Tavan Tolgoi coal mine has an estimated operational life of over 200 years with an annual turnover of $1.6 billion USD for the first 29 years.

Most of Mongolia has yet to benefit from a modern approach to exploration and mine development, and many believe that more major discoveries will be made. New project development is benefiting from international investments and major mining company support hoping to capitalize on Mongolia’s excellent resources located next to two of the largest commodity consumers in the world; China and Russia.
